Kylian Mbappe has been the centre of the discussion since he didn’t play against the Netherlands due to his broken nose. His side was certainly frustrated and wasteful in front of goal without him, but it looks like he could be available to some extent today.
Poland's Eagles have to win for any chance of remaining in the competition. They’ve lost both of their games so far and were thoroughly outplayed by an impressive Austrian team last time out. Robert Lewandowski has returned to action, which gives them some hope. However, they'll need more creativity to provide the Barcelona striker with the chances we know he can put away.
France is tied for tops in Group D with its 1-1-0 record and four points going into a big final day for the group, which could get its top three teams to the knockout round with France (4 points), the Netherlands (4 points) and Austria (3 points) all showing good form in the early going. France defeated Austria, 1-0, in its opener and played the Netherlands to a scoreless draw. Poland is 0-0-2 with losses to the Netherlands (2-1) and Austria (3-1) but could complicate matters in Group D by delivering a stunning result against France.
More often than not, the now Real Madrid winger occupies a central position rather than attacking the back post when the team is attacking wide areas.
From there, Mbappe constantly offers himself as a cutback option while the centre-forward is dragging the defensive line deeper.
Despite only making his international debut in October, Jakub Piotrowski’s attacking skill set perfectly fits Poland’s style of play.
Featuring as a No 8 in midfield, Piotrowski’s off-ball movement complements the team’s wing play by providing passing options for the wing-backs and wide centre-backs, or making late runs into the penalty area.
There are six players potentially involved tonight who would miss their next match if they receive another booking this evening.
Obviously, that's more impactful for France's players, given they will almost certainly be in the knockout stages, while Poland are already out.
Poland’s attacking approach is simple and effective. However, they are over-dependent on wing-backs Zalewski and Frankowski in terms of chance creation.
Their two main options for ball progression are either long passes to the centre-forwards, or circulating the ball towards their wide areas.
On one hand, its attacking benefits have been clear in possession and on attacking transitions for years, but France’s narrow 2-1 quarter-final victory against England in the 2022 World Cup illustrated their left side can be exploited when facing strong opposition.
A very similar situation to France (explained in the previous post). Ronald Koeman’s side will qualify if they don’t lose against Austria.
And if they do avoid defeat, they will win the group if they at least match France’s result against Poland — providing the French don’t score enough to finish with a superior goal difference.
They could come third if they lose and the outcome of the France-Poland game doesn’t go their way, but the Dutch should still go through in this situation thanks to already having picked up four points.
So much so that if Albania don’t beat Spain on Monday, June 24 then Netherlands will be guaranteed a place in the knockout stage (as a best third-placed team at the very least).
A draw would see them finish third on four points (likely enough to qualify) and defeat would also see them come third, but their three points would be far from certain of ensuring qualification as a best third-placed team.
Les Bleus are second to Netherlands in Group D after playing out a goalless draw against the Oranje, while the Polish were the first to be stamped out from the tournament following their 3-1 loss to Austria.
Kylian Mbappe was spotted sporting a mask training as the Real Madrid-bound forward is likely to feature after missing the game against the Netherlands.
With Mbappe's entry, France boss Didier Deschamps will have to sacrifice either Adrien Rabiot or Aurelien Tchouameni in the XI as N'Golo Kante should retain his spot.
